Why Recycle?
The Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Strategy
Whilst recycling at home has become the norm, it is estimated that 75% of the eight million tonnes of waste sent to landfill in Scotland each year in originates from business sources(1). The Scottish Executive's policy in relation to commercial waste is similar to the policy for domestic waste in that it aims to move further away from landfill towards waste reduction, recycling, composting and the use of other technologies to treat residual waste. As the cost of waste disposal continues to rise, businesses will increasingly move towards alternatives, such as recycling and reuse services, which are becoming more economically viable. Landfill Tax is set to grow year on year and will increase by 67% in the medium to long-term (2).
Every Little Bit Helps
The majority of businesses in Scotland (97%) are classed as small to medium enterprises (SMEs) – organisations with less than 250 employees. Whether small or large, by reducing, reusing and recycling their waste, businesses can help to save the earth's natural resources, save energy, reduce the risk of global warming and reduce the need for waste to be sent to landfill.
